Our History

The Westwood High School Alumni Council (WHSAC) was born from personal experience and a commitment to giving back.

In 2023, Luther Bells graduated from Westwood High School and aspired to attend college out of state. During this process, he encountered significant financial challenges. Although he was ultimately able to navigate these obstacles, the experience left a lasting impression and planted the seed for what would become the Westwood High School Alumni Scholarship Program, created to directly support students from his community facing similar challenges.

In 2024, Luther sponsored the first Westwood High School Alumni Scholarship, donating $2,500. That year, eight students were awarded scholarships. Two students (one male and one female) received $500 each, and six additional students received $250 each. The application process required a short essay response, two letters of recommendation, and proof of college acceptance, ensuring both merit and commitment were recognized.

The scholarship program continued in 2025 with expanded support. With assistance from Ms. Ashley Truss, Director of Student Activities, and former Redhawks Jaslyn and Ayonna, a total of $2,750 was raised. Contributors included the Westwood High School Improvement Council, Dr. Tisha Boston, Ms. Ayonna Sewell, Cedric and Phillicia June, and Luther Bells. That year, six students received scholarships. Two students (one male and one female) were awarded $500 each, while four students received $350 each.

While planning for the 2025 scholarship cycle, Luther met with Principal Nicholson to discuss the long term possibilities of creating a formal alumni council. The vision centered on strengthening alumni connections, fostering pride, and expanding opportunities for current and future Redhawks.

On October 13, 2025, Luther reached out to five individuals to form the founding Executive Board of the WHSAC. Shortly after, on October 21, 2025, the organization submitted its Charity Verification Application, which was accepted. Roles were formally established in accordance with the Council’s Constitution, and on November 6, 2025, the WHSAC officially became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Today, the Council continues to build on this foundation, supporting students, strengthening alumni engagement, and uplifting the Westwood community.
